The NYPD’s Summer Youth Police Academy is now accepting applications for kids to join the program for six weeks of mentoring, physical activity, recreation, and more.
The kids will have the opportunity to directly engage with local law enforcement, fostering stronger community ties and gaining an understanding of police work.
The academy invites youths aged 10 to 15 to participate in a comprehensive six-week program filled with educational and hands-on activities.
The program, which is set to run five days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., allows participants to train with police officers in the borough where they reside.
During these sessions, they will delve into a range of topics including law, behavioral science, drug prevention, and gang resistance through lectures, role-playing, and practical demonstrations.
The program provides the opportunity for these young individuals to engage in military drills akin to those in the Police Academy and to explore police facilities on organized field trips.
In addition to the structured learning environment, participants will receive daily lunch, uniform shirts, and an environment that promotes responsible citizenship and positive interactions with law enforcement officers. The program also encourages participants to engage in other NYPD youth initiatives, such as the Law Enforcement Explorers, Police Cadet Corps, and the Police Athletic League.
For those looking to secure a spot, applications are due by June 9, 2024.
